Foods I Want to Like

There are some foods that I really, really, really want to like. I keep trying them in hopes that my tastes have changed, but I haven’t had any luck yet. I want to like these foods because other people love them, so I know I’m missing out, but… I CAN’T STAND THEM! Don’t worry over the picture, I like brussels sprouts now 🙂

  1. GOAT CHEESE: Oh, how I want to like goat cheese. I want to looove goat cheese. Everyone else does, and they look so happy eating it. It always comes on cheese plates. It comes on salads and pizzas too. But the taste of goat cheese completely repulses me. I can detect goat cheese in my food even if I don’t know it’s there, and my appetite goes kaput. Does anyone have a cure for this sickness??
  2. MINT: Why don’t I like fresh mint? It is paired with so many things that I love and want to fully enjoy- spicy Thai food, summer rolls, mojitos. Fresh mint is a real pain to pick out of food. My mint aversion allows me to imagine the true horror that people who don’t like cilantro go through. And those cilantro haters are really missing out!
  3. BELL PEPPERS: Bell peppers are so versatile and they come on so many things. They are generally easy to avoid, but I don’t want to have to avoid them. I want to make stuffed peppers. I want to enjoy gazpacho with all of its intended ingredients. I am not completely repulsed by the taste of peppers like I am with goat cheese or mint, but I don’t enjoy it and the taste tends to linger with me for the rest of the day.
  4. SALMON: Blech. Salty and fishy, not for me. But life would be so much easier if I liked salmon. I could enjoy lox on my cream cheese bagels instead of having to load up with tons of cucumbers to keep things interesting. I could order the salmon dish that appears on every menu I’ve ever read. I could cook something David really enjoys. I keep giving salmon a chance, but still no luck.

I’ll keep on trying these culinary foes, and hopefully you will see some of them featured here one day. My hopes are high. What foods are unbearable to you? Do you wish you liked them, or is that just me?

Foods I Want to Like — 22 Comments

  1. Mushrooms. Yuck, pooh, icky… And they show up in just about everything anymore. Biting into 1 will put me off my entire meal.

  2. Aaah! I don’t care too much for soft goat cheese either, although I have found a fantastic chicken dish that includes goat cheese: Grilled Chicken with Sun Dried Tomatoes, Goat Cheese, and Mango Salsa. It’s divine. I have found a hard goat cheese (at Costco) that is nothing like the soft, and I put it in eggs, salads, or just eat it plain. It comes in big blocks and is encrusted with thyme and other herbs. I hope you give it a try!

  3. Lima beans. Gack. I think it must be smoked salmon that turns you off. Regular raw salmon is not salty, and to my tastebuds, not fishy either. Aside from shellfish and halibut, it’s the only fish I really like.

  4. Eggs, I’ll eat them in things but I want to like them by themselves. Poached and fried eggs look so yummy but one bite and I want to ..well you know. Why am I the only person not to like eggs boo 🙁

  5. Tofu. I’ve tried it only twice, at home. The area I live in has not caught up with the tofu movement, so I haven’t had the chance to try it from a restaurant. I want to love it, cook it, and turn others on to it.

  6. I’m with @Barbara above – lima beans. I want to like them – they look so pretty and fresh and pale green. And I’d love to make succotash and enjoy it. But I just can’t do lima beans. Bleah. 🙂

I happen to love all the things you mentioned above … so I’m probably not any help in suggesting how to make them more palatable. 🙂 But one thing did come to mind: Salmon. Get the freshest salmon you can, make sure to take off the skin (it’s where much of the oil comes from that gives it the salmony/fishy flavor) and soak it in milk for an hour before you cook it. Then rinse it and grill it or bake it. You might find that soaking it in milk will totally neutralize the fishy-ness of it and help you enjoy the rest of the flavor and the texture.

  7. i cant stand peppers! its so funny because ive always wished that i liked them – they seem to be in a bunch of things i love, but have to avoid the peppers. sigh……

  8. I am so glad to find someone who is probably well traveled and savvy that doesn’t like salmon. I love your recipes I will never eat salmon or oysters, altho I like escargot. Crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!! huh. Also don’t like oatmeal must be the texture, I have tried but I gag. Love grits tho.

  9. I want to like everything you like or don’t like even if I don’t like them now and even if everybody likes them. I like the pictures of the things you don’t like and want to like. In fact I LOVE everything you write and every picture you take. So there!

  10. No brussel sprouts for PopPop!!!! I like them roasted. Don’t care for mint, but
HATE cilantro. Tastes funny. Really don’t like salmon. Something in it’s
Makeup tends to make me feel lousy, but I feel bad about it ’cause it’s so
Healthy. Don’t know much about goat cheese, but I’m willing to give it a try.
Next time I’m in Trader Joe’s or Wegman’s (love that store) I’ll sample it.

    Love you, David, & Stella

  11. The things I don’t like but wished I even had the nerve to try are things with “bellies”..i.e., guts, still attached, like clams, oysters, mussels, snails. I cringe when I think of biting into such things, and wonder if the people who let the oyster slide down their throats are thinking the same thing. I will eat New England clam chowder, but that’s as far as it goes. I also cringe when I think about eating blue cheese or anything else that might contain mold–getting into your teeth and staying there. Aiiyyyyy.
On the other hand, fungus in the form of a mushroom is a delight!!

    • Mmmm … blue cheese. The moldier and stinkier the better. 🙂

I guess I’ve never thought about oysters’ digestive systems before. Heh. I can’t say that the thought of it bothers me – they’re just too delicious.

Totally agree about the mushrooms though. Can’t get enough of them of any variety.

  12. I love smoked salmon (lox) but I’m not a fan of regular cooked salmon. I wish I could like raw fish in sushi. I keep trying blue cheese with the hopes I’ll start liking it. I can eat a little at a time. Forget goat cheese….I’ve given up. I used to think I didn’t like oysters until my friends turned me on to them and now I enjoy eating them. The only other thing I’m not crazy about is chicken salad. I love chicken. I love tuna salad. Just not crazy about chicken salad. One of my favorite cheeses is Prima Donna. Delish! It’s very interesting reading about what other people dislike.

  13. I’m with you on the salmon!! Most seafood actually, not into, including shellfish, calimari, you name it. The only fish I don’t mind is halibut, probably because it doesn’t taste like fish.

I’m also another egg-hater. Oh and beans.
