Ramp Pizza

Ramp Pizza

I finally feel safe saying that spring is here to stay (what a ridiculous thing to have to say in May), and with spring comes ramps! Ramps are a mild, oniony-garlicky plant that is one of the first things to grow once the winter fades away, so it shows up on seasonal menus and at farmers markets this time of year. I met my friend at our local farmers market for lunch last weekend, and we went home with the springiest of hauls- bunches of ramps and rustic bouquets of flowering apple tree branches. Ramps are delicious brushed with olive oil and grilled, but I opted to put them on a pizza this time around.

The ramps give the pizza a garlicky aroma, but the flavor is not overpowering at all. To make this pizza, preheat your oven to 500º F. Cut the roots off of the ramps, and clean them very well. My ramps were really dirty.

Slice the ramps into bite-sized pieces, and then put them in a bowl. Drizzle the ramps with olive oil and sprinkle them with salt. Toss them until they are evenly coated. The olive oil will protect the ramps from the high heat in the oven.

Stretch or roll out your favorite pizza dough, and spread it with marinara sauce. Crumble over some fresh mozzarella cheese, followed by the ramps and pine nuts. I think pieces of semi-crisp bacon would do a lot to make this pizza even more delicious.

Bake the pizza until it is golden brown and crispy. In my new apartment’s oven, it took 12-14 minutes to reach the perfect doneness as opposed to the 10 minutes I usually recommend. So let’s go with 10-15 🙂 I hope your spring has been beautiful and delicious.

Pomegranate Lemonade

Pomegranate Lemonade

Long after my ginger lemonade cocktails had been slurped down, the warm weather kept me craving more refreshing lemonade. But I wanted to experiment with a new flavor, and the pomegranate syrup I had leftover from my red pepper dip was the perfect addition. A healthy drizzle (about 3 tablespoons) of the syrup into my normal batch of lemonade (approximately 1 cup of simple syrup, 1.5 cups of lemon juice, and 4 cups of water) made for a tasty and colorful concoction.

Muhammara: Red Pepper Dip

You can purchase pomegranate syrup in some supermarkets, but you can also make your own by simmering pomegranate juice until it reduces down and stops bubbling.

Also, this is the last recipe you’ll see photographed on my sunny windowsill because I moved…a whole 1/2 block. Stella puppy lost her perch, but she seems to like our new setup anyway. Also, I’ll be experimenting with an electric oven for the first time- tips are welcome 🙂

Shopping list:

  • Lemons- 6-7
  • Sugar- approximately 3/4 cup
  • Pomegranate syrup- 3-4 tablespoons

Stella Visits the Cherry Blossoms

Stella Visits the Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossom season really is one of the most beautiful times of year to enjoy DC. Stella and I went for an early morning (for us!) jog down to the Tidal Basin where the most flowers bloom to take in the pink, fragrant blossoms. We had so much fun together. Each breeze showered us with tiny petals that landed lightly on Stella’s fur. She looked so pretty, and she curiously examined the petals floating in the water.

Stella was really happy to be outside on such a beautiful day, and she got a lot of compliments and pets from passing tourists. She could not contain her smile!

It was our first visit to the cherry blossoms together, so we felt inspired to take some selfies. I am confident that I looked insane. There were so many other people around with cameras, that I’m surprised nothing has appeared online yet making fun of us. Whatever…catching Stella’s kisses on camera was worth looking foolish.

I love how lush and fluffy the trees look when they are bursting with flowers. Flowering trees stud this city, but the ones lining the Tidal Basin carry the greatest impact because there are so many of them.

Stella and I also visited the MLK memorial for the first time when we were down by the Mall. The memorial is huge and very impressive. Stella’s favorite part was the waterfalls that flank the memorial, but they were just beyond her drinking distance. Instead, a park ranger helped me fill my hands in a water fountain so Stella could quench her thirst. As the morning grew later and the crowds swelled, it was time for us to head back home. Until next year, cherry blossoms!
