Stella: the Flattest Wedding Guest

Flip book

Well, we did it! Our pack is officially a family! Although Stella didn’t participate in our wedding in person, she was there in cardboard form. Yes, Stella has her own cardboard cut out. We used her as a prop in our flip-book photo booth, and people seemed to be having fun with her (some of them a little too much!). The picture above is a still shot from the little movie David and I filmed with stand-in Stella.

I am not sure how I came up with the idea of making Stella into a cardboard cut out, but it was a very fun process. I took Stella to the dog park at magic hour (as the sun was setting and the light was golden), and we had a little photo shoot. I wanted to get a clear profile of Stella where she was looking at the camera and smiling with her tail up. Mission accomplished!

Then, I uploaded Stella’s picture to a website that makes cardboard cut outs and requested that they cut out her entire body instead of leaving a base for her to stand on. The company did a fabulous job. If you look closely, they even cut out around Stella’s toe hair and ear hair. The cut out is so realistic that when I catch a glimpse of it out of the corner of my eye, I get startled! I scream. I jump. I gasp. Eventually, I had to fold up and hide the cut out just to avoid having a pre-wedding heart attack!

Happy holidays!

Simple Solutions- Saving Zested Fruit

For a long time, I zested my citrus and then it went to waste. I’d put the fruit in the fridge, but it would quickly turn rock-solid, and I wouldn’t be able to use it. My hardened lemons and oranges became so annoying that I complained to friends, and one of them offered up the perfect solution.

If you wrap your zested fruit in plastic wrap and place it in the fridge, the plastic will act as a second skin and keep the fruit from drying up. I’ve used this technique constantly since then, and I haven’t had another fruit rock impede my ability to get fresh juice. I used the naked orange pictured above in my favorite Blue Moon, Butternut Squash, and Shrimp Risotto. Make it, if only to test this plastic wrap trick!

Life Outside the Kitchen

I’ve been busy. Too busy to buy food, let alone to cook it and write about it. Instead of planning meals and recipes, I’ve been planning a rapidly approaching wedding! There are so many fun little details that I’ve been wanting to share with you, especially one Stella-related item, but I will have to wait just a few more weeks. Here are some cute pictures of her to whet your appetite.

On the food front, there are some standby items I’ve been turning to during this busy time (aside from take out). Roasted chicken is comforting no matter what is happening in life. Pumpkin pasta is wonderfully quick and easy to make, especially if you have leftover roasted chicken to use in it! Reheating frozen chana masala is also cinch when time is short. And now that it’s chestnut season, I have been roasting some almost every day. My snack rotation also includes a healthy dose of pomegranate, along with several less-healthy doses of kettle corn.

When I’m not improvising meals, assigning tables, or writing more emails than I care to count, you can find me traipsing around my apartment trying to break in a pair of very uncomfortable (but very pretty) wedding shoes. Or kissing Stella. Or smiling! Oh, and happy Hanukkah!!
